About BOLT – Balsamo Outreach for Learning and Teaching

Bolt.unmuhbarru.ac.id, Barru – Founded in 2010 by Dr. Peter John Wanner (an Associate Professor at Tohoku University, Japan), Balsamo Outreach for Learning and Teaching (BOLT) is an international organization dedicated to the professional development of educators and the enhancement of global academic collaboration. The name BALSAMO arose from an example of Balsamo in facilitating teachers throughout Japan and internationally.

Core Mission and Focus

BOLT’s core mission is to empower students, faculty, and researchers by providing relevant and practical training opportunities that foster a global mindset and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Teacher Training: BOLT provides teacher training seminars and workshops that are rooted in current educational theories and use a model of content-based instruction using English. This approach helps participants improve pedagogical skills while simultaneously developing their English communication abilities in an academic context.
  • Academic Exchange: The organization actively works with universities, for example in Southeast Asia (including Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines) and Japan, to create platforms for cross-border academic exchange and capacity building.
  • Interdisciplinary Focus: BOLT encourages the study of interdisciplinary topics to cultivate future leaders who possess a holistic understanding of global challenges and are prepared for cross-border collaboration and innovative problem-solving.

Key Programs and Initiatives

BOLT’s activities primarily take the form of international events, often in collaboration with higher education partners like the Konsorsium Perguruan Tinggi dan Cendekiawan Nusantara (KPTCN) for the Summer School in Japan 2025. Since 2025, there is strategic partnership between BOLT and Universitas Muhammadiyah Barru in establishing the secretariat of BOLT in Indonesia.

  • Asian Youth Forum (AYF): This is a key annual initiative designed to engage young leaders from across Asia in dialogue, workshops, and cultural exchange centered on critical regional issues like sustainable development, technology, and social justice.
  • International Summer Schools and Seminars: BOLT organizes programs like the Summer School in Japan and the Tohoku International Interdisciplinary Seminar (TUIIS), often under the framework of initiatives like the Malaysia–Indonesia–Japan Linkage on Interdisciplinary Studies (MAJLIS). These programs focus on topics such as renewable energy, digitalization, and mental health.
  • Student Mobility Programs: BOLT also facilitates student mobility and academic summer camps that focus on intensive English practice, academic writing, and cultural immersion in various cities in Asia.

By emphasizing practical application, cross-cultural interaction, and the development of soft skills, BOLT positions itself as a catalyst for meaningful, sustained improvement in teaching and learning across diverse educational landscapes.

MOU and MOA signing with Institut Kesenian Makassar

On November 17, 2025, Dr. Peter John Wanner, founding president of Balsamo Outreach for Learning and Teaching (BOLT), signed a Memorandum of Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. Ir. Muh, Hasbi Abbas for Institut Kesenian Makassar with BOLT.  Dr. Wanner also was the keynote speaker for an International Seminar where he discussed collaboration and the various opportunities for Students and Teachers to develop themselves further.  Dr. Wanner touched on cooperation and collaboration through the following ways listed in the Memorandum of Understanding:

  1. International contacts
  2. International exchanges
  3. Double degree opportunities
  4. Joint research and publication
  5. Joint courses, workshops and conferences
  6. Joint journal and book publishing

Institut Kesenian Makassar put forth a commitment to the above areas with the joint collaboration of BOLT through the Memorandum of Agreement as follows:

  1. Intitiate opportunities foreign cooperation
  2. Explore research and publication methods
  3. Discuss and introduce scientific characters of research
  4. Music and Dance Arts performances

The seminar and agreement between BOLT and Institut Kesnian Makassar increases the collaborators and researchers increasing opportunities for collaboration.

 

Local and global collaboration of ideas November 11, 2025 at Institut Agamu Islam, Rawa Aopa.

Balsamo Outreach for Learning and Teaching (BOLT) and Institute Agamu Islam, Rawa Aopa signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Memorandum of Agreement on November 11, 2025.  The Memorandum of Agreement includes active participation in BOLT events in the future.  Dr. Wekke chaired a session with a theme regarding local and global interaction through collaboration with other countries.  Dr. Peter Wanner, associate professor of the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University, presented on enhancement and enrichment programs that it has to insure a World-Class Research ecosystem.  Sustenance of research is guaranteed through special funding and other assistance to students, teachers, and researchers.

Dr. Wanner is also the founder of BOLT in 2010 and he discussed how BOLT initiated and expanded to incorporate enhancement and enrichment programs for students, teachers, and researchers.  He touched on some of the recent programs such as the Tohoku International Interdisciplary Seminar (TUIIS), Summer School programs, Indonesia Japan International Interdisciplinary Studies (IJIIS) program, Asian Youth Forum (AYF) , and support for the Student Mobility program.

Call for Delegates English Summer Camp in Japan 2026

Bolt.unmuhbarru.ac.id, Makassar – Balsamo Outreach for Learning and Teaching (BOLT) is inviting Universities interested in extracurricular programs for intensive English and understanding of other cultures to have a faculty member and their students atten a special English summer camp in Japan.  The Summer camp will take place in various cities including Sendai, Akita, and Tokyo.  The dates for the English summer camp are from August 23- September 1, 2026.

Activities at the English Summer Camp include students presenting 20 minute presentations on some type of research area they are pursuing.  The research in may cases can be a pilot study of a project for a research paper they are working on for graduation with their advisor or just a research paper they are writing.  Likewise, students and advisors will travel throughout Japan and experience the culture, food, and livelihood that it offers.

It is recommended that delegates interested in joining this program get their Passports as soon as possible if they plan to possibly attend this summer camp.  The time to process and get a valid passport, Official Letter of Invitation, and make preparations for travel in advance is necessary for any program abroad.  Further information on itinerary and schedules for the summer camp will be posted soon.

Bolt.unmubarru.ac.id, Barru – The 3rd International Summer Camp will be another agenda of BOLT and IAI Darul Dakwah Wal Irsyad with a kind support of Universitas Muhammadiyah Barru. Get ready for an enriching international experience! The 3rd International Summer Camp is slated to be a significant upcoming event, jointly organized by BOLT (Bolt Outreach for Learning and Teaching) and IAI Darul Dakwah Wal Irsyad. This highly anticipated agenda reflects the ongoing commitment of both institutions to fostering global academic and cultural exchange. Building on the success of previous camps, this third iteration promises a unique blend of learning, collaboration, and exploration in the beautiful locale of Barru.

AYF 2025, Da Lat University Vietnam 7-14 December 2025

Bolt.unmuhbarru.ac.id, Da Lat – The Asian Youth Forum (AYF) is gearing up for its highly anticipated 2025 edition, slated to take place from December 7th to 14th at Da Lat University. This prestigious event promises to bring together young leaders from across Asia, fostering collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for the future.

The AYF has consistently served as a vital platform for youth engagement, empowering young people to address critical issues facing the region and the world. This year’s forum is expected to build on that legacy, offering a dynamic program designed to inspire and equip the next generation of Asian leaders.

The AYF 2025 will feature a diverse range of activities, including workshops, panel discussions, keynote speeches, and cultural exchange events. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with prominent experts, policymakers, and fellow young leaders, fostering valuable connections and expanding their networks.

Ismail Suardi Wekke, the President-Elect of the Board of Leaders and Trainers (BOLT), emphasized the significance of the AYF as a platform for youth in Asia.

Wekke added during the visit in Da Lat Vietnam for the MoU between BOLT and Dalat University (Vietnam), “The Asian Student Research Competition is a testament to our belief in the power of research and innovation. Pengumuman Kegiatan di Jepang 2025

Bolt.unmuhbarru.ac.id, Jakarta – BOLT mengumumkan kegiatan yang akan berlangsung di Jepang tahun mendatang 2025, pada tanggal 24 hingga 31 Agustus 2025. Kegiatan ini mengajak seluruh peserta untuk merasakan pengalaman tak terlupakan menjelajahi keindahan Negeri Sakura, tidak hanya di kota Tokyo saja, tetapi juga akan menjelajah ke kota lain di Jepang.

Selama seminggu penuh, peserta akan diajak berpetualang ke berbagai kota menarik di Jepang, mulai dari Tokyo, Osaka, hingga Kanazawa. Setiap kota memiliki pesona dan keunikan tersendiri yang siap memukau para peserta. Mulai dari menikmati keindahan alam, mencicipi kuliner khas, hingga mempelajari budaya Jepang yang beragam.

Ismail Suardi Wekke BOLT Fellow mengatakan, “Kami berharap kegiatan ini dapat menjadi wadah bagi peserta untuk lebih mengenal budaya Jepang secara mendalam dan mempererat hubungan antar negara.”

Kegiatan ini terbuka untuk umum, baik bagi Anda yang sudah familiar dengan Jepang maupun bagi pemula yang ingin mengenal lebih dekat Negeri Sakura. Tidak ada batasan usia dan latar belakang untuk mengikuti kegiatan ini.

BOLT and STIKES Panrita Husada Initiate Cooperation and Partnership

bolt.unmuhbarru.ac.id, Bulukumba – BOLT and STIKES start to discuss the potential cooperation and partnership in higher education. This activity already started on 17 August 2023. They will come to MoA after the initial meeting in Bulukumba. Since October 2023, BOLT in Southeast Asia arrange one of the site administration in Universitas Muhammadiyah Barru.
